Fleshing Out the Characters
There are K-dramas that are good and there are those that stand out. What we think makes My ID is Gangnam Beauty (also referred to as 내 아이디는 강남미인 and ID: Gangnam Beauty) too great to watch is the careful treatment of its main characters, who are played by Lim Soo Hyang, Cha Eun Woo, Kwak Dong Yeon, and Jo Woo Ri. Below let’s talk about what makes them beautifully controversial:
1. Kang Mi Rae
She changed her face, and she’s paying the price.
Played by Im Soo Hyang, Kang Mi Rae starts life anew by undergoing plastic surgery. She enters college with a ‘new face,’ hoping to enhance her social life and experiences. She eventually attracts attention that she’s never had before and learns to handle them in her own way.
What we like about this character in My ID is a Gangnam Beauty is that she’s determined to change her character flaws with the same determination she mustered when she decided to have plastic surgery. At first, we see her ‘scoring’ women’s looks and having assumptions about them based on their appearances. But this changed when his childhood friend-turned-lover Do Kyung Seok confronted her about this habit.
Lim Soo Hyang’s character also underwent intrinsic change when she finally decided to date Kyung Seok (and let people know about it!), realizing that she can be loved and admired and that the more important thing is to care for her happiness and not what other people think.
Kang Mi Rae is a chemistry student with a knack for scents. She hopes to become a perfumer one day and possibly take over the world with her dance moves.
2. Do Kyung Seok
He’s the center of attraction everywhere he goes.
Do Kyung Seok couldn’t care less about his face, privileged life, social constructs, or his peers. He lives by himself without minding others, except those closest to his heart. He grew up disliking women ever since his mom (with a gorgeous face at that) abandoned him and his sister. He never smiles nor shows affection. He shows great leadership skills when necessary and can see right through people.
Cha Eun Woo’s character in My ID is Gangnam Beauty undergoes change when he decides to give his mother a chance (thanks to Kang Mi Rae), leaves his home, and earns money by doing part-time work. He became penniless and hungry at certain points, but he found the means to survive, not only to fend for himself and prove his independence, but also to fund his dates with Kang Mi Rae.
Do Kyung Seok believes that you don’t have to show interest to everyone and that loving a person is about embracing their totality. He is loyal to his girlfriend and has his heart set on looking at her, only her. He is also a very heavy drinker.
3. Hyun Sua
You really can’t judge a book by its cover.
Hyun Sua in My ID is Gangnam Beauty is a very controversial character. Given her A+ looks and the very charming personality she has, you’d think she’s the main character of the story. But Jo Woo Ri’s character is very unstable. She doesn’t like it when she’s not the center of attention. She feels uncomfortable if the guys don’t focus on her. She has the habit of making up stories just to maintain her dignified reputation.
Hyun Sua hates Kang Mi Rae the most because she reminds her of her friend who underwent plastic surgery and gave her a feeling of mistrust. She hates Kang Mi Rae because she believes no girl deserves to be happy with a fake face. But because of the hate she gave, this pretty lady in Gangnam Beauty had to face the reality (in a terrifying, humbling scene) that she doesn’t have to prove her worth to anyone. She can feel comfortable in her own skin without manipulating anyone to like her.
Hyun Sua used to hate perfume and has never liked Do Kyung Seok despite her vying for his attention.
Other Characters in My ID is Gangnam Beauty

Don’t miss the heartwarming scenes that include Do Kyung Seok’s mother’s return, young Kang Mi Rae’s suicide attempt, Dohee’s rapping, and Kwak Dong Yeon’s character being taken care of by Cha Eun Woo’s (it involves brushing his teeth!).
