Pocket Wifi vs. SIM Cards in South Korea
It’s a no-brainer. If you’re traveling with a group, you should get a pocket Wifi device (or two!). Not only will you minimize your spend when you split up the daily rental rates, you’ll also travel freely without feeling bothered that you’re draining someone’s phone that has the mobile hotspot turned on.
If you’re traveling solo or with a buddy, this is where it may get a little tricky. I tried getting both the Korea pocket Wifi and data SIM card for my trips, and I prefer the former for three reasons: I can rent the Wifi egg for the exact number of days as my trip, I don’t drain my mobile phone’s battery easily, and it’s much cheaper for my preferences. Here’s my price comparison:
My trips to Korea are typically 12 days long. If I choose to get a SIM card, I’d have to buy the 30-day plan which costs around ₱2,700 or $51.5 for unlimited data. (KT’s SIM cards plans are currently limited to 1, 5, 10, and 30 days.) However, for a South Korea pocket Wifi, I usually shell out around ₱1,400 or $27 only for 12 days. I used to think that purchasing a SIM card should be cheaper, but whenever I book my Wifi rental device for Korea here, I just get to score some discounts. (Hopefully they keep the discounted rates forever!)
